The year 2004 has been a grim year but is not as worse as what we had all experienced a few years back.
Strictly speaking, the world is more peaceful than it was in 2001 when the 911 attack had struck and the war against terrorism had started and is perhaps still better than 2002 when the Iraq war was declared...
As I look at the top ten news articles of the year that was voted by many of us who live in Singapore, the top two listings are the two elections.
Why must president Bush be re-elected when he had supposedly started the invasion of Iraq for many reasons first unrevealed to the general public?
Why must Chen Shui Bian be re-elected although many would know that this would not improve the already strained relationship with Beijing unless Chen Shui Bian changes his attitude and goes for a united China?
Well maybe this are a few things that young people like us would never understand...
Looking at the rest of the top ten news articles, we see that all the others top ten listings would hardly suggest any good news, and if it is, it probably is to people who sells oil for a living or love to see people die and also to people who wants to see what will the US do to get out of the frying pan they had gotten themselves into...
Anyhow, a year is about to end and as the festive season is about to reach its climax, an earthquake, than has currently claimed the lives of 123,181 people, occurred. A great tragedy that some people named the darkest Christmas.
Well, lets us not forget what happened on Christmas during the two world wars in the 20th century. Perhaps only the first Christmas in the first world war was any peaceful, the rest were bloody. It is a very sad mistake that man invented war.
And there will be no more fireworks to start the new year, as this dark shadows of over 123,181 people being dead on the 26.12.2004 close in on us.
A year that marks a grim end would not be shaken off by a bunch of fireworks...
And this day, 26.12.2004, that marks the end for this 123,181 people who saw the grim year coming to a close, would never see the joys that beckons a new year to them ever again and would never see the sunlight shining on them when this chaos that had encircled the world ever since 11.9.2001 is totally removed and beckons a new hope to the world.
Together, we must push on with hope and make the best of our lives admist this chaos.
Good bye, good bye, 2004, and may your happening be remembered in history, and so will your final note of tragedy be written down to be remembered forever...
